Running for a Cause
Update: December 5, 2019. Sadly we are at 212 reported death by suicide. We need to celebrate how they lived and eliminate the stigma associated with suicide. I continue to run for my own wellness, and to remind me to stay focus and honor those that suffered alone.
Update: September 29, 2019. Since my last update less than a week ago, the number of suicides by law enforcement officers has increase to 163. Sadly this number will continue to increase before 2019 ends. Even though I have met another one of my goals of running 163 miles to honor those who died in the line of duty, I will continue to run for this cause, hoping that the number of officers who die by suicide will stop. To date I'm at 172 miles.
Update: September 23, 2019. Since my last post the number of confirmed officers who have died by suicide increased by 20. I've met my goal by running 157 miles to date, unfortunately we keep losing officers to suicide and the number is expected to go up. I hope I am proven wrong. Next goal 163 miles to honor the officers who died in the line of duty in 2018.
Update: August 30, 2019. I've met the 111 miles milestone to honor a good friend's call sign, unfortunately the number of officers who have died, so far this year, by suicide increased by 25 since my original posting. Increasing the total from 105 to 130. Hope that I am able to reach the 130 mile mark without the lost of another officer. Remember, it is not how they died, its how they lived.
This year I made a pledge to start running with individual goals of reaching reminders of the sacrifices made by others as I got stronger with my running routine. I had a late start, but fortunately I was able to get on track with my running and fulfill my goal. Today marked a total of 68 miles since I started running. Sixty-eight marks the number of police officers killed in the line of duty to date in 2019, 163 total in 2018. Unfortunately we have also lost 105 reported officers to suicide so far this year, with an estimated 160 reported suicides in 2018.
My next mark is 105 (hoping that the number does not change) for the number of officers that have committed suicide this year, 111 my friend's call sign, 160 the estimated number of officers who died by suicide in 2018, and 163 for those that died in the line of duty in 2018.
